Affirmation: “I am dedicated to my family”

I interact with many wonderful people throughout my day. It is a blessing to be so close to those I care about. Although I have respect for my coworkers and friends, I have a special place in my heart for my family.

My spouse and I often partake in activities we enjoy together. When we have fun together, our relationship deepens.

Even though my kids’ lives are crammed with school, sports, and other extracurricular activities, I insist on having time to talk with each of them.

Communicating with my children brings me happiness. It warms my heart that my kids know I am interested in what they have to say. They realize that I am there for them, without question.

My goal in life is to remain close to each of my family members. Our bond is strong because I make my devotion to them quite clear.

Although life can be especially hectic, my family is at the top of my priority list.

Today, I express to my family members how much they mean to me. My dedication to them is endless. I demonstrate my love for my family by being physically present as much as possible, communicating with them daily, and ensuring I make it a priority to spend time with them.

Self-Reflection Questions:

  1. How much time do I spend with my family each day?
  2. When did I last allow for individual time with each of my children?
  3. What are some ways I demonstrate my dedication to my family?

Wahaca was born in 2007 from a love of fresh, honest Mexican Market food. First inspired by Thomasina Miers’ travels to the country and her stint living in Mexico City, she and co-founder Mark Selby later set about recreating Mexico’s vibrant flavours and social dining culture at home in the UK with fresh and exciting dishes made for sharing, as per the gregarious style of Mexican eating.

Leading the wave of fresh Mexican food for almost fifteen years, Wahaca was recently named by Londoners as their favourite restaurant (YouGov, 2019). Its recipes, such as guacamole freshly made in each restaurant every day with fresh lime juice and ripe Hass avocados or the signature pork pibil tacos made with free range British pork, have helped Wahaca build a huge following of fans who collectively eat 3 million tacos a year across our restaurants.

In 2016, Wahaca was the first UK restaurant to be certified as carbon neutral, and in keeping with its passion for sustainability, all ingredients are sourced as locally as possible, or grown and transported with care for the environment. Fish is of the highest sustainability accreditation (MSC certification) and each Wahaca restaurant is designed to the highest sustainability levels.

With 13 restaurants across the UK, each site-specific designs references the terroir of the local areas and their style of street art, Wahaca transports diners on a journey of discovery, straight to the streets of Mexico – creating fun and dynamic spaces where guests can enjoy great food and experience the many and varied different styles of cooking that Mexican food has to offer. Whether it’s a light snack before hitting the Westfield London shops, or a post cinema hot chocolate and churros, Wahaca White City has the answer.

With sunnier skies and temperatures rising, Wahaca has just launched its new menu for Summer 2022. As well as bringing a whole host of delicious dishes made with fresh seasonal ingredients to the table, the menu also sees the Mexican restaurant group continue its commitment to sustainability by introducing carbon counts for every dish – helping customers make conscious choices around the food that’s kindest to the planet.

Switch out the chicken this summer with the new Meatless Farm ‘Chicken’ & Avocado tacos (£6.95) – all the taste of Wahaca’s classic chicken tacos, but minus the meat. Having searched high and low for the best plant-powered ‘chicken’ around and settling on the marvellous morsels from Meatless Farm, Wahaca drizzles them with ajillo oil, tops with guacamole and green tomatillo salsa and serves them in two soft corn tortillas. The tacos are the latest meat-free dish on Wahaca’s street food menu, 50% of which is now veggie.

The Devon crab & avocado tostadas (£6.95) are a fresh taste of summer, Mexican style. Inspired by Thomasina Miers’ travels to the shores of Veracruz in Mexico, this delectable dish uses the best of British crab, sourced much closer to home. Served with chipotle mayo and pink pickled onions on a pair of crisp tortillas, delicate crab meat balances brilliantly with the punchy chipotle – best enjoyed alongside a well-chilled glass of white wine!

Caesar salad originated in Mexico – who knew? The celebrated classic gets served with a delicious Wahaca twist just in time for the summer months – the Simple Caesar (£5.95) finds baby gem lettuce brimming with crispy capers, veggie parmesan shavings and tortilla strips plus a totally irresistible dressing. Make it into a light lunch by adding chicken (£3.00).

For an even larger helping of goodness, Wahaca’s bigger plates menu now includes two new Wholefood salads – bursting with seasonal, sustainable ingredients that combine to create bowls of deliciousness that are just the ticket for the summer months. Choose between grilled chicken (£12.75) or ancho-roast cauliflower (£11.75) – both are packed with protein and fibre, with British-grown quinoa joining cauliflower shavings, crisp cos lettuce, avocado-free ‘Wahacamole’, dressed mixed beans, toasted nuts and seeds and a habanero crema that brings a mellow heat and fabulous fruitiness.

Finish your feast with a tantalising twist on an English summer classic – out with Eton and in with the Mexican Mess! (£6.50) A house-made meringue gets its dusky violet colour from freshly-ground hibiscus flowers which, when topped with fresh strawberries, lime zest and softly-whipped cream, makes for a dessert that’s decadent, delicious and totally too good to share.

And with calorie counts now appearing on restaurant menus nationwide in line with newly-introduced government regulations, Wahaca has gone a sustainable step further by bringing carbon counts to its menus from this month, in addition to the calories. The move, a first for a UK restaurant group, is designed to help diners make conscious choices around dishes that are kinder to the planet. Working in partnership with food and climate specialists Klimato, Wahaca’s menu now shows the overall greenhouse gas emissions of every dish by giving it a low, medium or high carbon rating.

This recipe by Jack Blumenthal appears in From Beder’s Kitchen. Jack says: “I produced this recipe when I was a chef trainer at the University of West London. The students and customers loved it.”

Jack Blumenthal

PREPARATION TIME: 10 MINUTES, PLUS 6-12 HOURS MARINATING | COOKING TIME: 20 MINUTES | SERVES 6

Ingredients

  • 1 scotch bonnet, cored and roughly chopped
  • 3 spring onions, chopped 80g root ginger, peeled and chopped
  • 2 cloves of garlic, crushed 20g tomato paste
  • 3 sprigs of thyme, leaves picked and stalks discarded)
  • 2 tbsp dried parsley
  • 1 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp ground allspice
  • 1½ tbsp smoked paprika
  • 1⁄2 tbsp cayenne pepper
  • 1⁄2 tbsp white pepper
  • 4 tsp sea salt
  • 150g muscovado sugar
  • 150g Canadian maple syrup
  • 1 tbsp rapeseed oil
  • 2kg chicken wings (ask your butcher to remove the tips)
  • 330ml premium lager (San Miguel or Red Stripe works great)
  • 3 limes, zested and juiced
  • 2 limes, cut into wedges
  • Fresh coriander leaves

Method

Using a food processor, blitz the scary hot scotch bonnet, spring onions, ginger, garlic, tomato paste, thyme, parsley, spices, salt, sugar, maple syrup and oil together until a loose paste forms.

Find a large tray big enough to fit all the chicken wings in, or several suitable containers. If you have food-safe gloves, get those bad boys on. If not, wash your hands before you go to the toilet, or you’re in a world of pain.

Smother all the wings in the paste. Do not be shy and ensure every part of every wing is covered. Cover the chicken and refrigerate for 6 to 12 hours. Ideally, prepare this the day before and marinate overnight.

When you’re ready to cook, preheat the oven to 160°c and prepare a skillet. Alternatively, get the barbecue roaring.

Line a baking tray with a baking sheet or greaseproof paper. Take the wings out of the marinade, keeping everything left in the containers, and place them on the lined baking tray. Bake the wings for 15 minutes in the preheated oven.

In the meantime, put all the remaining marinade into a saucepan. Do not waste a drop; this is flavour town. Add the beer and all the lime zest and juice with a splash of water. Bring to the boil then turn down to a simmer.

Cook until the amount has reduced by half to create a glaze.

Once your skillet or barbecue is roaring hot (nearly smoking) remove your wings from the oven and get them cooking. You should hear a very intense sizzle.

Cook the wings for 1 to 2 minutes on each side until they turn a deep dark charred colour, then apply the thick jerk glaze to each wing. Serve with the lime wedges and fresh coriander leaves.

Affirmation: “I am certain my children are safe at school”

I have a sense of certainty about the safety of my children. Peace fills my mind while my kids are away from me at school. I am free from anxiety about the safety of my children while they receive their education.

The school where I have chosen to send my kids is a safe place. There are people whose sole job is to look after the well-being of my children while they are there. School staff cares about the security of all students, including my kids.

In the event of an emergency, there are proper procedures in place to keep my children out of harm’s way. The school has all of the phone numbers they need to find me in the event of an emergency.

I practice safety procedures with my children. My kids know what to do in a variety of emergency scenarios. My children’s teachers also practice school-wide emergency procedures with their classes.

I am free from anxiety regarding my children’s safety. I reject irrational fears about the safety of my kids while they are at school.

I can focus at work because I believe my kids’ lives are protected. I approach my days full of energy and ambition, trusting that my children are doing the same thing at their school.

Today, I believe that my children are safe at school. I think positive thoughts to keep my mind calm while we are apart.

Self-Reflection Questions:

  1. Does my children’s school have an emergency plan?
  2. Does my kids’ school have my contact information?
  3. What positive thoughts can I reflect on while my children are away?

This recipe is from The Modern Cook’s Year by Anna Jones, published by 4th Estate. It also appears in From Beder’s Kitchen. Anna Jones says: “I would put coriander seeds in everything if I could get away with it! In my mind they are good wherever you would think to add lemon, so here one of my favourite cakes has had a reinvention using both.”

Anna Jones

PREPARATION TIME: 20-25 MINUTES | COOKING TIME: 50 MINUTES | SERVES 8-10

Ingredients

  • 200g unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 200g golden caster sugar
  • 4 medium-sized organic eggs
  • 150g white spelt flour
  • 2 unwaxed lemons, zested and juiced
  • 6 tbsp runny honey
  • 1 tbsp coriander seeds, toasted and crushed to a fine powder
  • 1½ tsp baking powder
  • 150g ground almonds

FOR THE SYRUP (OPTIONAL)

  • ½ a lemon, juiced
  • ½ tbsp honey
  • 1 tbsp coriander seeds

Method

Preheat your oven to 190°c or 170°c fan.

Grease a 24cm cake tin with a little butter, then line it with greaseproof paper.

First, beat the butter and sugar together in a large mixing bowl until light and fluffy.

You can do this in a stand mixer or with a handheld whisk if you like.

Crack in one egg, add a tablespoon of flour and beat until mixed in, then do the same with the other three eggs. Stir in the lemon zest, lemon juice and honey.

In a separate bowl, mix the ground coriander seeds, remaining flour, baking powder and ground almonds together with a whisk until there are no lumps.

Mix the dry ingredients into the honey mixture until everything is combined.

Spoon the mixture into the lined tin and smooth out the top.

Bake in the preheated oven for 50 minutes, until golden brown on top. The honey will make it brown quicker than a normal sponge cake, so if needed cover the tin with foil to stop the top browning any further.

When the cake is done, remove it from the oven and leave to cool in the tin before turning out and slicing.

If you want to add the syrup, gently heat the lemon juice, honey and coriander seeds together in a small pan then pour or spoon over the cake while both the cake and syrup are still warm. It’s sweet, heady and not at all savoury.

Tucked away in a historic courtyard in the heart of Mayfair, Hush Mayfair is a true hidden gem, and one of London’s most popular dining destinations, founded by Jamie Barber and Geoffrey Moore, Sir Roger Moore’s son. From Stanley Tucci and Colin Firth to Victoria Beckham and Joan Collins, Hush Mayfair has been quietly attracting those in the know for over two decades.

Part of boutique restaurant group, The Hush Collection, Hush Mayfair features a bustling brasserie and an exceptional cocktail bar plus two elegant private event spaces/dining rooms. The private dining room (known as the Sir Roger Moore Room) is beloved by the movers and shakers of the industry. The all-day menu available in the Brasserie and Courtyard changes regularly and features classic favourites with a modern European twist.

Offering the ambience of a private members club, without the need for a membership, Hush Mayfair is an elegant yet decadent destination that’s the perfect spot for the capital’s curious diners and drinkers, and is a must-visit for everything from long leisurely lunches, to post-work drinks and weekend catch-ups with friends.

One of London’s most impressive outdoor dining spaces, the much-loved Courtyard terrace has been transformed for spring in partnership with ENGINE, the hand-crafted organic London dry gin which uses 100% Italian botanicals and is packaged in a unique ‘oil can’ container, inspired by founder Palo Dalla Mora’s love of racing and representative of Italy’s involvement in the motoring world.

Designed to transport you on a ride through the rolling hills and ancient forests of North-western Italy, the Courtyard at Hush Mayfair has been bedecked in plentiful foliage and greenery. Taking inspiration from the blend of botanicals found in ENGINE, sage branches and Amalfi Coast lemons adorn rustic ladders.

Orchard baskets, crates and filled burlap sacks are scattered alongside potted herbs and plants. An Instagrammers delight, take a seat on a picturesque wooden swinging bench surrounded by gorgeous greenery or strike a pose in front of the iconic and intricate archway.

We dropped by for a relaxed lunch in the Courtyard at Hush Mayfair. Of the six cocktails on offer made with ENGINE organic gin, Remember the Star shone the brightest. A zingy blend of ENGINE Organic Gin, St Germain, grapefruit, ginger, bergamot and blackberry, this very fruity drink would complement any spring drinks setting but works especially well out in the Courtyard terrace.

If you wish to add a little sparkle into your daytime drinking, Old Alliance is a much higher calibre cocktail than a Bellini. Yes, you still have the peach and a hint of bubbles however the Pier Ferrand Cognac and oregat take the Canard Duchene Champagne to a higher level of bubbly delights.

For pre-dinner nibbles, I highly recommend ordering the Fried Brussels Sprouts with bacon, smoked almonds and caramelised yoghurt. The sweetness of the yoghurt pairs wonderfully with the saltiness of the bacon. Texture and crunch were brought to life by the almonds. Very moreish and a must for any Brussels sprout lover even if Christmas is many months away.

From the Starters menu, the Roasted Orkney Scallops had a perfect sear yet were light and succulent. The combination of pine nuts and cauliflower combined perfectly with a cheeky curry kick sweetened by raisins which lingered after each bite.

My lunch companion chose the Aged Beef Fillet Carpaccio. Quite a generous portion with a lot of flavour. The first bite gave an impactful injection of horseradish but by the second bite, the flavours were perfectly balanced and the capers really added depth and complexity to a very fresh starter.

For the Mains, the Roasted Stonebass was an interesting combination that felt like a bouillabaisse and a Thai curry had a love child. An interesting fusion that worked. The fish had a meaty texture yet still came across as delicate. The skin was crispy and was almost like the bacon of the sea with enough salt to be flavourful but not too much to overpower the dish. Fennel is an acquired taste, but the spices balanced well with this root vegetable. The spinach works as a welcome burst of leafy greens to this well-crafted dish.

The Miso Marinated Black Cod was a daring attempt for such a European menu. More often seen on a Japanese menu, I was intrigued to see if this combination would work well outside of a Japanese dining setting. I was pleasantly surprised although I would still say the Japanese restaurants have the edge. This was still a delicious dish and satisfied my hankering for Black Cod with the pleasant combination of Pak Choi swimming in a dashi broth. A winning dish despite the high standards I put upon it.

Blood Orange & Pistachio Trifle was disappointing. The dessert looks pretty but can only boast a meagre topping of some pistachio nuts.

If you want a hard hit of pistachio, we suggest choosing the Sicilian Bronte Pistachio gelato from the selection on offer from Hackney Gelato. We paired this with the highly recommended Warm Sticky Toffee Pudding – which normally comes with clotted cream and ice cream. The dessert is probably better paired with the Madagascan Vanilla gelato unless you are a hardcore pistachio lover like myself. Whatever ice cream you choose, you can’t go wrong with the Sticky Toffee Pudding because it tastes so good.

There is a lot of attention from the wait staff but sometimes they don’t seem to be communicating with the kitchen as our Aspen Fries came out after the main meal and the desserts swiftly followed before we could even eat 3 of the fries. As desserts had to be eaten presto pronto, it wasn’t the best timing as black truffle and gelato don’t really go together but the rest of the lunch was so lovely that we decided to overlook this hiccup and my lunch companion enjoyed the fries while I tucked into the desserts. All’s well that ends well!

Orrery is the epitome of French elegance set in the heart of London. This classic French restaurant on Marylebone High Street offers a place of sanctuary to let you escape the hustle and bustle of W1 and experience sumptuous French food with a modern twist, an award-winning wine list and one of London’s most famous cheese trolleys that’s taken to the next level thanks to the outstanding service.

Awarded three AA Rosettes and with the prestigious Test of Time award by Tatler in 2016, Orrery boasts an elegant dining room on the first floor of a converted stable block. The space is brightened by the floor to ceiling arched windows, framing the St Marylebone Church courtyard, and flooding the restaurant with natural daylight.

Following the restaurant’s 2018 refurbishment by David D’Almada of Sagrada, the furniture, artwork and textiles take inspiration from the south of France with details of lavender panelling and handmade terracotta clay pots.

The bar adjacent to the restaurant in Marylebone is an intimate space in which to enjoy an aperitif before heading through to the restaurant. It’s ideal for weekend cocktails and pre and post-dinner drinks alike and has an outstanding selection of seasonal cocktails, fine wines & spirits, and Champagnes available by the glass in addition to a selection of cigars.

Orrery’s rooftop terrace in Marylebone is one of London’s best-kept secrets. Elegantly lined with delicate lavender and olive trees, be transported to Southern France whilst enjoying a drink and light meal in the sunshine or under the stars!

Sensitive to the seasons, Orrery’s Chef Patron Igor Tymchyshyn uses only the best British ingredients with great attention to detail. Igor’s style of cooking is approachable yet refined, evident in the creativity and careful presentation of each dish.

Igor joined Orrery as Head Chef in April 2008 from his role as Head Chef at the Michelin-starred Mirabelle restaurant in London’s Mayfair and was appointed as Chef Patron in January 2016. Igor joined Mirabelle as a sous chef in 1999 before being promoted to senior sous chef in 2000. Earlier experience includes roles in other Michelin-starred establishments: sous chef at L’Oranger and Head Chef at Maison Novelli EC1, starting as a chef de partie.

Here are some of our highlights from the Lunch A la Carte menu when we dined at Orrery with friends this spring.

I cannot rave about the Seafood Raviolo with lobster bisque enough. It is the perfect combination of seafood flavour and creaminess. This was a really popular dish with our table, with all three of the diners who chose it saying they were impressed and would order it again.

Those who aren’t a fan of seafood should really try the Beetroot Tartare with goat curd & autumn truffle if it’s still on the spring menu. The presentation was stunning and the flavours well balanced. So often vegetarian options miss the beauty of the main vegetable ingredient itself. At Orrery, the beetroot was really able to shine in presentation and taste.

Although charged at a supplement to the set menu, it would be a disservice to not try the Tournedos Rossini which is served with potato purée and roasted onion. The sweet and soft texture of the foie gras complements the meaty flavours and textures of the steak.

However, the star of the show for this dish has to be the truffle hit from a delightful sauce Périgourdine. Come in for a closer look at the Tournedos Rossini after the addition of the sauce.

For a lighter lunch choice, we recommend the Baked Fillet of Salmon with herb crust served with wild mushrooms & horseradish. Although the chef suggested having the salmon cooked slightly pink, our diner asked for a more cooked salmon. Her request was served perfectly to her liking and the meal was thoroughly enjoyed. For those happy with a pinker salmon, trust the chef because it would definitely work with this dish.

As an avid lamb fan, I was disappointed that there were two beef dishes on the menu (Tournedos Rossini and Braised beef á la Bordelaise) when I have heard such good things about the lamb at Orrery. Unbeknownst to me, one of my dining companions had notified Orrery of my beef allergy and my love of lamb. I was offered an amazingly succulent bespoke lamb dish off-menu. This was served with a well-paired selection of vegetables with the salsify being an interesting and welcomed choice. The potato mash was so good, I ordered a side portion of the Pomme purée with Périgord truffle to get another fix.

We suggest taking the time to have a cheese course because the choice of Farmhouse cheeses from Orrery’s award-winning cheese trolley has been very carefully curated by Orrery’s ‘Frommelier’ Anthony Schepper.

Our selection of cheese comprised of Reblochon, Secret du Couvent, Comté, Roquefort and Roche Montagne. Whether you are new to exploring cheeses or an experienced cheese aficionado who wants to branch out, we highly recommend being guided by Schepper. You can never know too much about cheese when in the presence of someone like Orrery’s ‘Frommelier’ Anthony Schepper!

For a light yet scrumptious finish to your meal, we highly recommend the Rhubarb pannacotta with Champagne jelly. Although it is more the texture of blancmange, it has the delightful taste you would expect from a traditional pannacotta.

The table’s favourite, however, was the Chocolate fondant served with classic vanilla ice cream. The perfect end to a delicious meal.

Orrery truly is a place of gastronomic sanctuary where you can leave your worries at the door knowing you’re guaranteed to experience a sumptuous feast of French flavours whilst escaping the hustle and bustle of London life.

Affirmation: “Family life is just as important as my career”

Balance makes me feel like I am achieving a lot of things in my life. I take pride in giving each aspect of my life its due attention.

My job pays my bills and puts a roof over my head. It is important to me to take good care of my loved ones, so I work diligently. Having sure income puts me in a position to be a reliable caregiver.

I also give care to my family by being present for their important moments. Although providing financially is important, emotional support takes equal priority.

My workday ends at a reasonable time to allow me to hang out with my kids. The time we spend together while they are young is formative. Maintaining a good relationship with them today forms a good foundation for a long-term bond.

The professional choices that I make align with my ethics. I work for more than just myself. I set an example for my children through the professional choices I make.

My kids and spouse are on my mind when I make career decisions. It is my goal to make them proud of me. Our time together is spent embracing each other for the good people that we are.

Today, work-life balance is my focus when I wake up each morning. I am committed to giving equal commitment to professional responsibilities and personal duties because they go hand in hand.

Self-Reflection Questions:

  1. What do I do when I realize that work is taking up additional time on a given day?
  2. Am I just as productive when I work from home?
  3. How important is it to ask my family members for their input on my professional choices?

Minipreneur is a big fan of Rachel Riley – the British award-winning children’s clothing brand that designs classic luxury childrenswear. Best known for their quality & style, Rachel Riley prints are designed in-house and the clothing features traditional craftsmanship including hand embroidery, hand smocked & the use of fine soft fabrics.

As a former Royal Marine Commando and sailing enthusiast, I’m always drawn to nautical looks for Minipreneur and he loves being kitted out in anything sailor-inspired. Here are Minipreneur’s favourite looks from Rachel Riley’s Summer collection.

The Sailor Jersey Shirt (£49) is such a classic look that can be seen on little dapper chaps everywhere in the summer. The soft cotton jersey shirt features an ivory sailor-style collar trimmed with navy ribbon. The Sailor Jersey Shirt has full button opening and turned up sleeve cuffs.

The Tailored Shorts (£49) in navy pairs perfectly with the above Sailor Jersey Shirt. These classic tailored shorts in crisp navy cotton feature turn-ups, side and back pockets, pleats and a zip fly. The elasticated back waist with waist adjusters allow for the perfect fit with plenty of comfort during Minipreneur’s busy days out.

Minipreneur says it is as good on land as it is on the River Thames.

The Sailboat Jersey Shirt (£45) is made from the softest cotton jersey in a classic polo shirt style featuring a stylish nautical sailboat print which is an exclusive print from Rachel Riley.

These gorgeous clothes are available from Rachel Riley’s flagship store on Marylebone High Street and online at www.rachelriley.co.uk

El Norte, the exciting new high-end restaurant venture from entrepreneurs Arian and Alberto Zandi, leaders of Emerald Hospitality Group, is now open on Mayfair’s Dover Street.

Celebrating Spain’s rich culinary history with modern flair and pioneering design, El Norte is the most ambitious endeavour so far from the acclaimed Spanish brothers, who co-founded Emerald Hospitality Group, which include in their portfolio the modern Latin American restaurant, Zuaya, and more recently their acclaimed Italian restaurant, Como Garden. Known for fusing excellent food with striking design, El Norte follows in the same vein.

A first for London’s Spanish restaurant scene, El Norte takes its cues from the country’s rich culinary regions, offering a sharing style menu of traditional Spanish dishes with a modern and luxury twist. Arian and Alberto Zandi, who were born in Madrid, are bringing Londoners a taste of their motherland with dishes exemplifying the brothers’ bold approach to flavours and textures.

The El Norte team works closely with several Spanish suppliers to source the finest ingredients. For example, the steak is from Spanish cows (Rubia Gallega) that are over eight years old and from Galicia in northwestern Spain, whilst the olives and olive oil are procured from Córdoba, and the ripest tomatoes derived from Andalucía in southern Spain.

A glamorous drinking and dining destination, El Norte has a chic and sophisticated interior reminiscent of its sister sites and features a focal-point bar with a 1:30 am license. The cocktail list features adventurous takes on classic serves alongside several house-made specials including amongst others, Cupido (Raspberry Vodka, Tio Pepe, Strawberry Mix, Basil, Cava).

A dedicated Sangria menu has also been lovingly crafted and comprises the revered Spanish beverage in its traditional form, alongside unique interpretations including Lavender Sangria. We enjoyed the Smoked Bacon Old Fashioned (Rye Whiskey, Chocolate Bitters, Bacon, Wood Smoke) and the Pistachio Mojito (Rum, Pistachio Syrup, Mint, Lime, Soda). The Old Fashioned has gone through a long process on its way to perfection. When they first dabbled with the idea, they realised it was too salty, then too bacony, after many months of adapting the recipe and many secret tweaks they have invented a must-try subtly salty version to this wonderful classic.

The menu is split into sections and features: Para Picar (Nibbles), Ensaladas and Crudos (Salads and Raw Dishes), Vegetales De Temporada (Seasonal Vegetables), Carnes (Meat and Poultry), Pescados Y Mariscos (Fish and Seafood), and Para Acompañar (Sides).

Our personal highlights from the menu included:

Croquetas de Jamón (Ham Croquettes with Guacamole) – These delightful bites have to come in our top three favourite croquettes of all time. The deliciousness of each bite keeps you coming back for more.

Croquetas de Queso de Cabra (Goat Cheese, Pistachio & Honey Croquettes) – These are also delicious and a scrumptious pairing of nuttiness and sweetness but they were sadly outdone by the Jamón variation and had a tough act to follow.

Berenjenas Crujientes con Miel y Feta (Fried Aubergine with Feta & Honey) – If you love aubergine, these are a must. The balance of the crunchy crumb coating against the soft feta brings this aubergine dish to life.

Calamares Fritos con Ali Oli (Fried Calamari Rings with Lime Mayonnaise) – This classic dish is found on so many menus, some better than others. This calamari dish can hold its own against its competitors but is not the star of the El Norte menu.

The true seafood star is the Pulpo a la Brasa (Grilled Octopus with Pepper Sauce & Mashed Potato). I would be surprised if you could find a better octopus dish amongst Mayfair’s best restaurants. The knife slid through the tentacle, like a hot blade through butter. The texture is divine. If you haven’t tried octopus, here is the place to have your first bite. But beware – your raised standards for octopus will be hard to beat after tasting this.

Chuletitas de Cordero Lechal (Milk-fed Lamb Chops & Marinated Peppers) are also a fabulous choice from the El Norte menu. Medium rare, just the right amount of pink and flavoured well without the pepper overpowering the herby flavours.

Patatas Bravas (Traditional Spanish Fried Potatoes with Red Pepper Sauce) – This is a popular side dish to order in every Spanish restaurant. You won’t be disappointed choosing it at El Norte.

Hot Coulant of White Chocolate & Pistachio (White Chocolate & Pistachio Fondant) was the perfect way to end this meal.

However, if you want to go for a classic, we recommend the Churros with Chocolate (Spanish-style Doughnuts with Chocolate Sauce).

After such a delightful feast of Spanish flavours, we have to admit that El Norte undoubtedly looks poised to become one of your favourite Spanish restaurants in London’s vibrant dining scene.

Affirmation: “Each morning the sun rises is an opportunity to reaffirm my morals”

I am prepared for every day I am blessed with. I see the rising sun as an opportunity to reaffirm my morals. I allow my morals to take me through the roughest situations each day and emerge unscathed.

I know that difficulties lie ahead for me. I accept that as a part of life.

My morals are challenged each day by negative people and situations. When I reaffirm my morals each morning, I am newly equipped with the tools to handle any negative situation.

I am able to take the high road when I recommit to my morals and beliefs each day.

Every decision I make at work takes into account my moral position. I am aware that my moral position may differ from that of my employer. But I am committed to staying true to myself.

If I encounter situations when I am forced to choose a course of action, I choose based on my beliefs. I prefer to remain upright than to compromise my beliefs.

I like having a clear conscience instead of one that eats away at me.

Today, I commit to preventing other desires from forcing me to compromise my beliefs. I believe my path is leading me toward success.

Self-Reflection Questions:

  1. Do my morals and beliefs change from time to time?
  2. How can I help my kids to be more resolute?
  3. What strategies can I employ to help me make the right choices?

Park Row is the world’s first fully immersive restaurant experience inspired by the Batman story within the DC universe in collaboration with Warner Bros. Park Row is not your typical theme restaurant, in fact, those who are wanting to see Batman will be in for a villanistic surprise. Park Row not only celebrates the super-villains of Gotham City, but it also takes their stories and brings their dark world to your reality without pushing them in your face so don’t expect to see any characters in costume and the dress code is more Bruce Wayne than Batman!

Located in London’s theatre district within a stunning Grade II listed Art Deco venue, Park Row is named after the area in Gotham where Bruce Wayne’s parents were killed. Commonly known as ‘Crime Alley’, Park Row was once one of the most affluent neighbourhoods in Gotham City before it became a notorious area for poverty and criminal activity. Park Row restaurant is where you’d expect DC Super-Villains, crooked politicians and greedy businessmen of Gotham City to frequent, despite the efforts of Batman and his allies to rid the city of crime. The vast 18,000 sq ft basement venue features five premium restaurant and bar spaces with a total of 330 covers. Please note you will be seated at one of the three available spaces or presented with options depending on how busy the restaurant is.

Each of the five spaces has its own signature style and takes guests on a journey from the streets of Soho to the depths of Gotham City’s underworld. Every detail has been carefully considered, with subtle nods to the characters and hidden ‘easter eggs’ for those in the know. The five spaces consist of Pennyworth’s (inspired by the Wayne family’s loyal butler Alfred), Rogue’s Gallery (inspired by Selina Kyle aka Catwoman), Old Gotham City (inspired by Harley Quinn), Iceberg Lounge (inspired by the Penguin and where we were seated for our night at Park Row) and The Monarch Theatre (the crown jewel of Park Row whose transportive restaurant experience is to be reviewed by SLOAN! later this spring).

Park Row Floor Plan

Each restaurant space serves the same A La Carte menu but has a designated bar with a signature drink focus – Pennyworth’s; whisky and cognac, Iceberg Lounge; vodka and gin and Rogue’s Gallery; tequila, mezcal and pisco.

Park Row’s menu includes luxurious dishes such as Goosnargh Truffle Glazed Whole Chicken with black truffle pomme purée Madeira jus to share and Aynoe Park Estate Fallow Deer and Dover Sole à la Grenobloise.

Fans can also indulge in Bruce Wayne’s beloved Mulligatawny soup or DC’s iconic Big Belly Burger.

Caviar from Gotham City Harbor, hand-dived scallops from Loch Fyne and fried oysters from Morecambe Bay are just a few of Park Row’s seafood dishes.

There is also a Laurent Perrier Champagne Trolley serving champagne by the glass.

Expertly crafted desserts incorporate stunning theatrical flourishes such as the highly instagrammable Kiss From A Rose – a sombre reminder of the roses Bruce left on his parent’s grave on the anniversary of their death.

Discover more about Park Row’s different spaces in our review of The Monarch Theatre coming soon. But for now, let’s focus on our evening of drinking and dining at Park Row’s Iceberg Lounge.

If you are a truly knowledgeable Gotham fan you would do well to look at the artwork around the venue. Selina Kyle aka Catwoman (Gotham’s infamous feline felon) has obtained by hook or by crook some wonderful paintings that depict some of the best villains to date.

We were seated in The Iceberg Lounge which plays host to a glittering array of live music every night from 8pm including Keys/Chilled Jazz on Tuesdays & Wednesdays to Jazz on Thursdays and Soul/Party on Friday and Saturday nights. Our musician Matt took requests and was very good at gauging the room. The music wasn’t cheesy or too intrusive. A beautiful voice, good humour and fantastic variations on music arrangements made this an added touch to the exciting night.

One of the favourite cocktails from our night at Park Row was the mesmerising The Blue Boy – gin, blue curaçao and citrus which is poured from a painting whose colour gradually drains as the drink fills the glass. It is no wonder then why The Blue Boy is one of the ‘must try’ drinks on the menu.

Originally known to society as a Gainsborough painting, those in the know are aware that The Blue Boy was taken by Jack Nicholson’s version of the Joker. Selina Kyle finally has it in her possession, but before that The Blue Boy was a dear friend to the Joker, perhaps his only friend at times. A combination of gin, blue curaçao and amaretto make this Park Row cocktail moreish but lethal as it is pretty strong.

The artistry and theatre when presenting the cocktail to you, means at least one member of your party should ask for this delight.

Fans of Old Fashioneds should try The Bludhaven – Park Row’s take on the classic cocktail blends Monkey Shoulder, honey, sesame and bitters. The drink comes garnished with a square sesame seed snap and the drink does not disappoint. The honey and sesame flavours infuse with the Monkey Shoulder blended malt whisky perfectly making the drink sweet and nutty with zesty orange honey and oak with a mellow spicy finish. For their pre-dinner cocktail, my dining companion enjoyed the sweetness of Love Me, Love My Umbrella – Grey Goose Vodka, Elderflower, Strawberry, Egg White & London Essence Soda.

To start, my dining companion ordered the Castle Wayne Hand Dived Scallops, which were generous in size and delectable in flavour. Seared beautifully, allowing the flesh to retain its softness, these delightful sea creatures were paired with Ironbark pumpkin, pumpkin seed & oat crumble – not a ghoulish combo at all.

Also on the Starters menu, we were recommended the Potato Croquettes with herb crème fraîche, Native lobster & Aruga caviar. So I tried them… with my expectations were low but oh was I wrong. These are probably my new favourite croquettes of all time. I have had pistachio, honey croquettes, Iberia ham croquettes, crab croquettes but these were just truly exquisite. Each bite was a combination of crunch from the croquette crumb, softness from the potato, luxury from the lobster, decadence from the caviar, comfort from the creamy cheesy dressing and a fresh taste from the micro herbs, especially the coriander. Just scrumptious, so delightful I wish I had more stomachs to be able to order them all day. A very well executed dish.

For the Mains, I chose the Wild Sea Bass as a light dish which includes razor clams & caviar, braised celery, cucumber and wasabi beurre blanc. The presentation looks simple but the dish is packed full of popping fishy notes. The razor clams and caviar provide the perfect texture to this dish and a point to note as someone who doesn’t like wasabi I tested the accompanying dressing and liked it so much I covered my fish in the fine sauce which adds a perfect touch to the fishy flavour. Crispy skin with super-soft flesh, this Wild Sea Bass dish did not disappoint.

The Lake District British Beef Cheeks had a hard act to follow with such great starters. Braised in red wine, they were good and the flavours of the sauce with kale and parsnips served two ways was definitely a dish that my dining companion would order again but, for her, the starters really stole the show.

Further elevating Park Row’s all-encompassing offering, tables are frequented by trolleys from Amusement Mile, serving up smaller snacks like nitro popcorn, edible helium balloons and nitro ice cream.

We ordered the Nitro Popcorn. This is brought in a stylish ice cream cart and frozen before your eyes. As the dry ice melts the popcorn smokes in front of your eyes. For those who like sweet caramel popcorn, this is a must.

For dessert, the theatrical experience definitely went up a notch. I ordered the aforementioned Kiss From A Rose. Although there’s no Seal insight to serenade you, it does feel like the Rose that is dipped into dry ice and shattered over your dessert is something to try at least once. In fact, dry ice plays a huge theme in Park Row and this just adds to the fact it’s an all-encompassing experience and a mini theatre at your table.

With its flavours of vanilla custard tart, textures of raspberry and rose and lychee ice cream, the instagrammable dessert goes well with the 2020 Moscato d’Asti Prunotto from Italy’s Piedmont region – just one of the exceptional wines on Park Row’s wine list that pairs perfectly with the menu. The ‘living’ wine list carefully curated by Head of Wine Milena De Waele will adapt and evolve to reflect new trends in wine-making and sophisticated palettes. A secret off-menu private cellar list is also available on request, including exclusive vintages.

My dining companion ordered a dessert that makes one think outside the box. The Riddle Me This dessert inspired by the villainous Riddler (of course) comes with its very own puzzle that certainly gets you thinking: “What Nut has no Shell?”. For those needing a hint, the biggest clue to the riddle is in the shape of the dessert!

The flavours speak for themselves. Caramelised apple, hazelnut cream, hazelnut sablé & apple jack ice cream all make this showpiece dish into something that will not only tantalise the taste buds but also give you a fun mental workout. Just like the mind-boggling edible helium balloons from Amusement Mile!

Combining multi-sensory storytelling with world-class food and drink that draws from some of Gotham City’s most famous (and infamous) residents, Park Row is a gastronomic theme park for comic book fans and foodies alike.

Park Row is open Tuesday to Thursday 5pm – 1am, Friday – Saturday, 12pm – 1am (last reservations 10.45pm) and Sunday 12pm – 9.30pm.
